"Deep inside me, there lay hidden a shining spark which seemed to be waiting for an opportunity to flare up brightly and freely."—Abbess Thaisia

Abbess Thaisia of Leushino Convent in Russia (1840–1915) was known throughout Russia as a guide to women God-seekers; she established the pattern for all the convents in the Russian north. Her autobiography is the product of a quick mind and a deeply feeling heart inclined to the mystical life. Accessible to readers on any level, it is thoroughly engrossing and brings one right into the author’s world. She opens herself up as an ordinary person with normal feelings, and by her testimony she shows us that communion with the Divine Source of life is attainable by all. In her we see how patristic wisdom can be applied in order to lead one out of two-dimensional worldly reality and into a transcendent sphere.

St. John of Kronstadt called the autobiography of Abbess Thaisia "wonderful, beautiful, divine," and urged that it be "printed for general instruction." For the first time in English, Abbess Thaisia: An Autobiography begins to bring this extraordinary servant of God out of obscurity and provides contemporary lovers of Orthodox spirituality and monasticism with a down-to-earth personal testimony of a real struggle undertaken out of love for Jesus Christ.

"When a man pays heed to himself, then even the smallest deviation from God, be it voluntary or involuntary, weighs down the soul and disrupts its peaceful state.… With this loss of peace there arises turmoil, disturbance, and frustration."—Abbess Thaisia

Illustrated with rare pictures from Abbess Thaisia’s time which help express the essence of the text, this volume also contains selections from her poetry and a complete translation of her book "Conversations with St. John of Kronstadt".
