Each Christian nation, encountering and coming to love the Incarnate God in the Person of Jesus Christ, has produced a "cloud of witnesses" which has laid a path for subsequent generations. Thus many Christian nations were set on their course not so much by various conquerors and military leaders, as by heroes of God who battled with the armies of Satan and won victory for Christ in formerly pagan cultures. Romania was especially abundant in such heroes. Romania was Christianized in the first centuries after the Lord’s Ascension, and subsequently acquired a rich monastic tradition.

Since the external senses cannot preserve the mind from thoughts, the mind must flee from the senses in the time of prayer, into the chamber of the heart, and stay there deaf and mute to all thoughts. For as a two-edged sword, whichever way you turn it, cuts with its sharp edge whatever is near it, just so does the Jesus Prayer work, being sometimes turned as a sword against evil thoughts and passions, and at other times against a sin, or towards the remembrance of death and eternal torments.”

—from the teachings of St. Basil of Poiana Mãrului, Romania, 18th century

The Romanian Patericon is now available in English for the first time: a compilation of the lives of righteous men and women who have adorned the Romanian land since the dawn of the Christian era. Volume I begins with the Lives of such 4th-century Daco-Roman Saints as St. John Cassian and includes more recent Saints such as St. Theodora of Sihla, Hiero-schemamonk Basil of Poiana Mãrului and St. Paisius Velichkovsky.
