Originally appearing in Russian, The Apocalypse in the Teachings of Ancient Christianity, by Archbishop Averky (Taushev) of Jordanville is the first complete Orthodox commentary on the book of Revelation to be published in the English language.

In our apocalyptic age, the book of the Apocalypse (Revelation) by St. John the Apostle has attracted widespread interest. Many recent books have dealt with this subject, most of them based on fallible human speculation rather than on the revealed wisdom of the Ancient Church. Now with the publication of the present work, the English-speaking world is introduced to the unbroken traditon of ancient Christianity concerning the last days. Archbishop Averky, a modern Holy Father in this tradition, takes us verse by verse through the mystical writings of St. John, interpreting each passage with the help of Scripture parallels and commentaries by God-illumined teachers.

The Apocalypse—the Revelation of St. John the Theologian—is the only prophetic book of the New Testament. It is a book of mysteries—deep mysteries bound up with the beginning and end of all things, the ultimate purpose of the world and man, the opening of the eternal Kingdom of Heaven—which is correctly understood and interpreted only with great difficulty.

“The darkness of the Apocalypse does not prevent one from being astonished at it. I cannot be a judge of the truths which are contained in it or measure them with the poverty of my mind; being guided more by faith than by understanding, I find them only surpassing my understanding.”—St. Dionysius of Alexandria, 3rd Century

“The subject of the Apocalypse is a mystical depiction of the future fate of the Church of Christ and of the whole world; it describes the battle of the Church against all its enemies and its final triumph over them. Thus, the reading of this book is a great consolation especially in times of persecutions and discouragements for Christians—such as our own times.”— Fr. Seraphim Rose, from the Introduction

The book includes extensive notes and introductory material by Fr. Seraphim Rose, as well as rare illustrations of the Apocalype.

Softbound. 306 pp.
