Rather than break his marriage vows, Peter chose to go into exile with Fevronia and together they left the city. Then the boyars began to fight among themselves who should be the next prince, and many were slain. The survivors came to their senses and ran after St. Peter, begging him to return to Murom with Fevronia, and restore peace to the city, which they did. However the people did not think it fitting to bury them together, and placed them in separate caskets while waiting for the funeral. The next morning the caskets were empty and their bodies were found together in the stone tomb. Sts.
