"Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death; and upon those in the tombs bestowing life! Thou didst descent into the tomb O Immortal. Thou didst destroy the power of death. In victory didst thou arise, O Christ God, proclaiming rejoice to the myrrh-bearing women, granting peace to Thine Apostles, and bestowing resurrection on the fallen" (Paschal Troparion and Kontakion). "This is the Chosen and Holy Day, the Feast of Feasts," Easter or Pascha, the Passover of Our Lord Jesus Christ from death to life! Set in a yellow gold horizon and with a bright blue behind Him, this icon shows Christ clothed now in brilliant white standing over the broken gates of Hades, pulling out Adam and Eve. Two angels are shown soaring above bearing the instruments of the Passion: the cross, the lance, and the sponge. On the right His Holy Apostles look on, while on the left stand in wonder the Old Testament kings and prophets along with the Forerunner St. John the Baptist. This modern Greek icon done in 1987, is patterned after the ancient traditional icons of the Resurrection, warming the heart, for “Christ is Risen!
