This is an English translation from Old Church Slavonic of the traditional prayer book used by Orthodox Christians in Russia and other Slavic lands. The English is the traditional semi-Elizabethan ecclesiastical style favored by many Orthodox in various jurisdictions. Readers from Orthodox Churches which use the Greek, Middle-Eastern, or other non-Slavic liturgical typicons will notice some relatively minor differences of content in a few places, but this seldom stops them from using this English Prayer Book. Both inside and outside, this is the most visually-beautiful of all the Orthodox prayer books we've seen in English. It has a sturdy hardcover cloth binding with the cover embossed in gold with a three-bar cross, the title, and an ornate decorative border. Cover made in burgundy. The size is 4 5/8" X 6 1/4", ideal for holding in the left hand while making the sign of the cross with the right hand. The print is large and clear and should be readable by all except those with extreme vision impairment. Some pages are graced by holy icons and traditional ornamentation (in monochrome).
This book is intended for lay people to use at home and at church, and should not be considered a substitute for the more complete liturgical books used by the clergy in the altar. The prayers mostly date from the earliest centuries of Christianity, and are thus the common heritage of all Christians. In addition it contains all the traditional everyday prayers for individuals and families, it has several favorite church services: The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Pascha, supplicatory canons to the Lord, the Theotokos, and the Guardian Angel, akathists to the Lord and the Theotokos, the canon of repentance, preparation for Holy Communion, thanksgiving for Holy Communion, selections from matins and vespers, selected troparia and kontakia, and lenten prayers. Also included are articles about how to pray in church and at home.
